ABOUT
Slavena Petkova is an interdisciplinary artist, working in the field of contemporary art and costume design.
She was born in Bulgaria in 1995. In 2017 she graduated from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. Her practice is currently based in Varna, Bulgaria where he lives and teaches.
She defines the stylistic of her work as Naivism, which aims to employ conflicting methods that both contribute to the process of telling a story and achieving a childlike simplicity of expression. She works across media, employing paper, canvas, bedsheets and a wide range of markmaking tools to found materials, text, gender norms, sexual expression, national pride, social progress, and social conflict. Her process is free-ranging, improvisational and experimental.
Her reoccurring interest in expanding boundaries of environmental and ethical design, as well as in the use of recyclable materials; has a pronounced presence in her textile crafts.
